Timing is Everything
Newborn photoshoots are best done within the 6-20 days. During this time, babies are super sleepy and naturally curl up, making those adorable poses a breeze.

Prepping Your Home
Here’s how to get everything ready:
- Keep it Toasty: Babies love warmth, so make sure the room is nice and cozy to keep your little one comfy and calm. Crank up your heater to approximately 75-80 degrees to create that perfect atmosphere.

- Natural Light is Key: Pick a room with lots of natural light. The soft light from windows will give your photos a beautiful, gentle glow. Open any blinds and curtains in your home before the session so that I can identify the best spots with natural light.

- Clear the Clutter: A tidy space ensures your baby is the star of the show, with no distractions in the background. Typically, the master bedroom, living area, and nursery are suggested.

What to Wear

Choosing the right outfits for your baby and family can make a big difference:
- Simple and Soft: Dress your baby in soft, simple clothes that are easy to take off if needed. Neutral colors and minimal patterns keep the focus on your baby. Stay away from bold colors like orange or hot pink, as they are too harsh for the setting and will not complement baby’s already rosier skin.

- Coordinated Family Outfits: Go for soft, neutral tones that match your baby’s outfit. This creates a cohesive and beautiful look. Neutrals are usually a safe bet. Beige, cream, white, and cool grays are great options for all family members. This helps keep the focus on the baby and keep things “bright and airy.”

- Parents’ Outfits: I typically allow for two sets of clothing. Most parents like to keep one formal outfit, and one casual. Moms, I suggest wearing a maxi dress or floor-length gown for your formal outfit. A light shirt and dark jeans go well for casual wear. However, it is important to wear whatever you feel most comfortable in! Make sure all the shirts are free of logos or writing. Wrinkles show up in photos as well, so please make sure all clothing is ironed or steamed. Dads, I recommend a neutral solid button down or sweater with well fitted khaki or black jeans or chinos.

Feeding and Comfort
A happy baby is a cooperative baby for a lifestyle newborn photography session:
- Feed Before the Session: Please have your baby fed right before the session. A well-fed baby is a happy baby! A full tummy usually means a sleepy and content baby. I will be happy to take as many breaks as needed to help your baby re-fuel! If you are nursing, try to avoid eating spicy foods or anything that will cause gas and upset your baby’s tummy 24 hours prior to your session.

- Have Comfort Items Handy: Pacifiers or favorite blankets can help soothe your baby if they get fussy during the session.

Outfits and Props
Be prepared with any outfits or swaddles. If you have any props that you would like to use, please let me know prior to the session. However, please note that I generally like to avoid props and instead capture connection-focused shots of parents handholding the baby. Dressing parents and siblings in solid, logo-free, and neutral outfits will put the focus on the baby by having them swaddled in a colorful or lightly patterned blanket. Bows look great on baby girls and are recommended to be purchased prior to the session as I do not provide them.

Siblings and Pets
Make it about them too, not just the baby!

- Photos with Siblings: Photos with siblings are usually taken first because children are unpredictable, and that’s okay. It is best to get sibling and family photos taken first before the child’s patience runs out. Try a mock newborn shoot sometime before the session so that your child is comfortable with holding, hugging, or kissing the baby. When putting them into their outfit during the morning of the session, try to have 2 options for them to choose from. This makes them feel involved and gives them the reassurance that this is all about them! Keeping snacks readily available tends to help them be in a better mood. Bribery is a great tool to use too! Let your child know that they will receive a “gift” if they behave well throughout the session.

- Including Pets: I love it when pets join in for family photos! However, safety for the baby is the number one priority for me. I will only position your pet close to the baby given your consent. Keep lots of treats handy!

Grandparents

Bringing a new baby into the home means grandparents also take on a cherished new role, and their presence can add a beautiful layer to your lifestyle newborn photography session. Grandparents are most welcome to join the session, as capturing the special bond between them and the baby creates lasting memories and celebrates the entire family dynamic. Their involvement not only enriches the photos but also highlights the loving connections that span generations.
